What is my navy fitness level when measuring body fat using the Navy Body Fat Test and Navy Body Fat Chart?
This Body Fat Navy Calculator uses the U.S. Navy fitness formula to get an estimated measuring of body fat percent. Use a tape measure then enter your waist, hip, and neck measurements.
Combine these measurements with your gender and height and this navy calculator will estimate body fat percent, lean mass, fat mass, and your general navy fitness category. (You can see the Navy Body Fat Chart by clicking the down arrow icon right under the results.)
The water displacement test is the most accurate way to determine body fat percent, but the Navy Body Fat test or YMCA formula is accurate within 1-3% for most people.
The Body Fat Navy Calculator is a Good Tool for Measuring Body Fat and Navy Fitness Level
The comments show passionate emotions and controversial discussions over this Body Fat Navy Calculator! Whether you like the results or not, we’ve had a couple of recruiters tell us they use it all the time.
Please keep in mind that we did not develop the Navy fitness criteria, we just created this Body Fat Navy Calculator using their formulas and interpreted from their body fat chart as a way to help people who are monitoring and measuring body fat.
I haven’t been able to verify this, but I would guess the Navy’s body fat test was developed decades ago by men and during a time when it was only used on male recruits because female servicewomen were not in combat roles.
No body fat percent calculator will be very accurate for people with a very muscular build. There is no argument that a hydrostatic or underwater test is by far the most accurate tool for body fat test tool, but it is not a practical tool to measure ongoing progress due to cost and availability.
There are other formulas for measuring body fat. - Age 18 to 21 – 22% for males, 33% for females
- Age 22 to 29 – 23% for males, 34% for females
- Age 30 to 39 – 24% for males, 35% for females
- Age over 40 – 26% for males, 36% for females
Body Fat Categories Table
The Body Fat Range for each Classification indicates how close your calculated Body Fat Percentage is to the next range.

| Essential Fat | 10%-13% | 2%-5% |
| Athletic | 14%-20% | 6%-13% |
| Fit | 21%-24% | 14%-17% |
| Acceptable | 25%-31% | 18%-25% |
| Obese | 32% + | 26% + |
Body fat percentage plays an important role in distinguishing between a healthy and an obese individual, as it has a greater ability to differentiate between lean mass and fat mass compared to BMI. If you’re interested in this topic, check out this article on .

All body fat calculations are based on statistical analysis. Just like how BMI is useful for insurance companies to accurately predict what your medical costs are going to be, this BF% test is useful for the navy to predict your capacity for fitness. It doesn’t actually test your body fat, it doesn’t measure motivation, performance, progress, or appearance. So don’t worry if it’s not accurate. It isn’t meant to be and doesn’t need to be. For the individual, it is useful as a tool to keep yourself grounded with measurable numbers in the context of how you feel about how you look and feel. Even if you had perfectly accurate BF% numbers, who cares? What would you do with that number anyway?
I lost like 3 lbs for mostly my thighs and stomach but gained more upper strength.
This isn’t right because this method DOES allow for half-inch measurements. In fact the instructions say to round to the nearest half inch. The fact that this calculator doesn’t allow decimals at all makes it useless.
just use metric for a more accurate input
This calc is idiotic, I’m around 11-12% but this test tells me 19%. Full retard.
Maybe you just THINK your 11-12%…
Yes, I was wondering the same thing, how did he get the 11-12% reading?
you are idiotic thinking you are 11 or 12 % of you measured waist correctly and neck correctly that is ur bmi
ur the retard because you dont know basic words like stupid, dumb, idiot, etc
Thank you
To measure waist size at belly button, does stomach have to be relaxed or can you flex it, tightening it up? I’m 42″ relaxed, but 34″ tight and wear a 34″ waist size pants.
Relaxed, exhaled, but not pushing out.
Pant size for men days waist but you measure your hip at narrow point where you belt would be unless you pull your pants up to your bellybutton lol.
If you’re relaxed and measure 42” that’s too much visceral fat ( all males should be 40” or less for good health
Hope that helps
I’m 6 foot 3 150 lbss at 9% body fat and my abs arent too visible even tho i’ve been working them out everyday for almost a month. How great my genetics are.
Mate… if your 150lb at 6’3 and 9% body fat your abs will be showing no matter what
Boda fat: ideal
So I’m 5’3 male 113 lbs and apparently I have -74% body fat, -84 lbs of fat, and 197 lbs of lean mass.
Neat
This numbers don’t look right at all. At 66kg and 170cm with a 39cm neck and 79cm waist, I’m nowhere near 12% body fat.
I’m calling the calculator kinda bullshitty or the formula is probably in a bad shape.
If I had 10cm to the waist (making it 89), it puts me at 20%, which is a bit more believable.
28 % body fat
Hello all. I think for me it got it right. I’m 5’6 and 128 pounds, i got 23% body fat. Last time I visited a nutritionist he calculated body fat using a caliper which is more accurate and he said I had 24%. I used metric in this calculator, if that makes any difference because of not rounding numbers…
I got 2 percent bodyfat even though I look like 9 percent.
This formula is pretty accurate, I have an impedance scale that you step on barefoot and according to that scale I am at 20% body fat and 174 lbs lean mass. This test said 17% body fat lean mass 178lbs. I’d say that’s good enough for government work.
It is pretty accurate. In fact I think it is more accurate then my Omron Body Composition Scale. The scale tells me that I have a 8% BF, but this calculator tells me that my BF is 16%. I am pretty certain the truth lies in between. Maybe if I average out the two it is more accurate. So, I guess I have 12% BF. I suppose I should lose 2 more inches around my waist.
Shocked at my waist size . Says I’m obese which is also had to take but it gives me the determination to turn this around.
5’35, 105 lbs with a 5% body fat. Fat mass is 5 lbs, and lean mass is 100 lbs. while my scale said i have 33% body fat, and when i at gym, the machine said i have 19% body fat.
My friend has -1% in body fat is that good?
NO
I’m a size 4, have a 27” waist and the Navy is telling me I’m obese :o/
This feels decently accurate for me! 5’8 125lbs woman with 25″ waist, this says 21%, my scale for some reason says 16.5% this morning but it’s usually in the low 20s, and looking at pictures of other women at about 21%, I’d say we look pretty similar. Now to gain more muscle!
16 june 22 at 2:55pm
The calculation seems pretty damn inaccurate. This estimation puts me at 9% body fat, I’d say I’m likely much closer to 20. With barely visible abs, and little muscle definition. Coming in at 5,10 180lbs.
My Bioekectrical Impedence Scale putd me between 15-20% body fat. Average. This calculator puts me T 11%. So hard to know which is more accurate. I have scheduled a Dexxa Scan and will compare that to both to see which “may” be mire accurate relative to the Dexxa Scan
It seems to me that this is a good start to worry more about the measurement than the weight. Although I find some problems. If this is true, the famous actor Steve Reves, according to the literature, measured 1.85 meters. and weighed 98 kg. I was 73 cm. waist and 46 neck, this means -4% body fat on the calculator, impossible!
Either these measurements are incorrect or there is some error in the calculation pressure. I have carried out this exercise with supposed measurements of famous athletes and in several cases these inconsistencies occur.
I just inputed the same values and the result was 14% BF, not -4%. You will get negative values if you don’t fill in all the measurements or forget to choose the right gender.
5’11” 189 lbs, 30% body fat, 43” waist, 16” neck, Obese it says. Ok so I have 2 weeks to live you say? Lol. I have been the skinny kid almost all my life. Birth – 32 years, now 44 yr old. I’m bald and fat now. People move out of my way, I got the double chin and pregnant belly look. Taught I was skinny fat but now I’m just fat. Lol, YouTube Jason Fong and fast. The hell with losing 30 lbs in one year or 6 month. Water fast, then soup, salty perfer before passing out, stationary bike ($25 on Craigslist) in the AM on empty stomach, pushups, crunches, bands. Time for me to use the fat on my body how I was designed my the Almighty Creator. I’m tired walking around with this 50 lbs book bag of emergency energy that I never use. Many winters have passed and I still don’t act like a bear, for I am a sophisticated design with a stupid forgetful brain. Not anymore, . Wake-up people, myself included. [email protected] please let me hear your story too.
I don’t think it is correct to assume men made the Navy formula years ago when women were not in combat roles. Most jobs in navy are not combat roles anyways. The Military and the Navy specifically have been conducting much health physiology research for years and years, to present. When I was training for the BUD/S test I worked through the US Navy Nutrition and Physical Fitness guides recently developed then. They had a team of PhD’s in various disciplines such as Kinesiology (and believe it or not mostly female, lol), produce them and in the process revamped the BMI scale for their target population. In this case it was for the SEAL community, so men, ages 18-40 who are very fit. They sampled a population of 900 USN SEALs to create their chart. So with a BMI of 30 I am an obese civy, but average SEAL. Likewise I measured my body fat using calipers and a number of different formulae available and calculated 17.7% body fat. The formula you provide here puts me at 17%. Close. For what it’s worth. Just eat healthy, be disciplined and try to PT every day. Embrace the suck. Over time your body will thank you.
Hhh
I just had a BODPOD test done (31.6%) and this calculator shows 31.4%.

Very helpful and easy-to-understand explanation of the Navy body fat calculator. I like how you included both the formula insight and category ranges—it makes tracking progress much clearer. Tools like this really help beginners stay consistent. I often track fitness alongside my routine (even during Null’s Brawl breaks 😄). Great resource!
Yeah this is actually a pretty handy tool — not 100% perfect, but good enough to track your progress without needing expensive tests. I like that it focuses on body fat instead of just weight or BMI.

Excellent post — insightful, clear, and truly helpful. Thanks for sharing!
Great post! Very informative and easy to understand.
This is a very useful and easy-to-understand resource for anyone looking to estimate their body fat percentage using the US Navy method. I appreciate how the calculator is presented in a straightforward way, making it accessible for both fitness beginners and those already tracking their health goals. The clear explanations and practical approach help readers better understand their results and stay motivated on their fitness journey. A well-designed and informative tool that provides real value for anyone focused on improving their health and wellness.
Body fat calculators using tape measurements are convenient, but your point about muscular builds throwing off the numbers is spot on — I’ve seen gym friends get flagged as “overfat” by the Navy formula when they’re clearly lean. And the guess about it being calibrated on male recruits decades ago would definitely explain some of the accuracy gaps.

I really appreciate how straightforward this Navy body fat calculator is — it takes the guesswork out of tracking fitness progress. I’ve been using it alongside my workouts to see if my lean mass is actually increasing. By the way, if you’re recording workout tutorials or progress videos, I’ve found that using a free online video converter helps keep files manageable without sacrificing quality. Definitely a helpful combo for anyone serious about fitness tracking.
I just tried the Navy body fat calculator and it’s pretty neat how it gives you a fitness category based on simple tape measurements. It reminded me how important it is to track your progress visually over time. For that, I’ve been using a Photo & Screenshot Text Editor to annotate side-by-side comparison photos of my waist and neck measurements. It really helps to see the changes and stay motivated. Definitely a handy tool to pair with this calculator.
Really interesting to see how the Navy formula estimates body fat – I’ve been using this calculator myself to track my fitness journey. It’s surprisingly accurate compared to my gym’s caliper readings, within about 2%. To stay motivated during workouts, I’ve started creating custom background tunes with AI音楽生成. Having fresh music each session makes the measurements feel less like a chore and more like a fun experiment.
The Navy Body Fat Test gives a decent estimate using simple measurements, though it’s not perfect—especially for really muscular folks. It’s handy for tracking progress over time without needing fancy equipment. For casual reference, you can watchfmovies.org to take a break and relax after all the measuring and calculating.

I’ve always been curious about how the Navy calculates body fat, so this calculator really caught my attention. It’s surprisingly simple—just a few tape measurements and you get an estimate that’s pretty close to more expensive methods. I tried it with my own numbers and the breakdown of lean mass versus fat mass was super motivating. If you’re into tracking your fitness progress, this is a great tool to add to your routine. I’ve been trying to get a better handle on my body composition lately, and this Navy calculator made it so much easier to see where I stand. It’s wild how just a few tape measurements can give you a pretty solid estimate of your body fat percentage. I remember struggling with the math before, so having the lean mass and fat mass broken down automatically was a huge relief. It also reminded me of how handy it is to have tools that simplify health tracking, kind of like how Manga Translator simplifies reading foreign comics. I’ve been trying to get a handle on my body composition lately, and this Navy calculator made it so much easier than I expected. I love that it uses simple tape measurements instead of fancy equipment, so I can do it at home. The results even broke down my lean mass and fat mass, which gave me a clearer picture than just a number on a scale. It got me thinking about how I track progress in other areas of my life, like music practice. When I’m working on guitar, I use an Online Guitar Tuner to make sure I’m starting from the right pitch—it’s a small step that makes a big difference. This calculator feels like that same kind of simple, reliable tool for fitness.

I’ll admit, I’ve always been a bit skeptical of body fat calculators, but this Navy one really surprised me with how straightforward it is. Just a few tape measurements and it gave me a clear picture of where I stand, which felt way more personal than just stepping on a scale. I especially liked that it breaks down lean mass and fat mass, so you’re not just left with a single number. It got me thinking about how I track my fitness progress over time, and I realized I need a simple way to jot down my measurements each week. That’s where I found this handy Notepad Online With Password—it’s perfect for keeping those notes private and organized. I tried it with my own measurements and was relieved to see I fall into the ‘acceptable’ range, though it made me realize how easy it is to let those numbers creep up. This thing is notoriously inaccurate if you actually lift weights since it ignores muscle mass entirely. I’d stick to a dexa scan if you want real numbers, but I guess pick apples works fine for a quick estimate.
This tape measure method is always so off for anyone who actually lifts. If you want a real number just court game online to a DEXA scan instead of guessing with this old formula.
I get why the Navy body fat formula can feel outdated—especially since it wasn’t really designed with today’s fitness diversity in mind. If you’re looking to shift your body composition in a more visual way, maybe focusing on how your physique *looks* matters more than the number—kind of like choosing a toon tone that matches your style instead of just chasing metrics.
The Navy body fat calculator is super handy — the measurements were easy to input and the explanation of how the formula works is a nice touch. I’d been hunting for a reliable one elsewhere and this is definitely a keeper. Thanks!

I’ve always been curious about how the Navy formula compares to other body fat methods, so this calculator really caught my attention. It’s nice to see the lean mass and fat mass broken down too, not just a single number. I tried it with my own measurements and the result felt pretty close to what I expected from past fitness tests. I’ve been tracking my fitness with the Navy method for a while now, and this calculator makes it so much easier than doing the math by hand. It’s wild how a few tape measurements can give you a pretty solid idea of your body fat percentage, even if it’s not lab-perfect. The line about the Navy test being accurate within 1-3% for most people is a nice reality check—it makes the tool feel honest rather than overpromising, which I appreciate.
Makes sense that the formulas are a bit off for muscular people. Simultaneous interpretation is still way more practical than trying to do the water displacement thing every week.
The article’s point about the Navy test being less accurate for very muscular builds is worth noting when tracking body fat. For a different kind of entertainment, you might find fmovies for streaming. related note

Good breakdown of the US Navy body-fat method — the waist/neck measurement tips and the age-specific standards make it easy to self-track progress between weigh-ins. I also appreciate the note about muscular builds skewing readings; it is a useful reminder that estimates are only as good as measurement consistency.
It definitely overestimates for anyone with a lot of muscle, but calculate proportions is still way more practical than trying to find a place for a hydrostatic test.

What stands out here is the honesty about the formula’s limits—most calculator pages won’t admit that very muscular builds skew results or that hydrostatic testing is more accurate but impractical for regular tracking. The tape-measure method is a reasonable compromise, and having the Navy’s age-based standards plus the body fat categories table right there makes it easy to interpret your numbers instead of just getting a percentage. The age-and-gender breakdown in the results is a nice touch too. On a somewhat unrelated note, for anyone who also works with visual assets, Image2Layer is a handy tool for turning flat images into editable layered files for design work.
It’s definitely gonna be off if you’ve actually got muscle. Tried this final calculator grade once and it way overestimated my fat %.

The part about navy fitness level measuring body fat made the post feel more grounded. It is helpful when an article gives readers a clear path into the subject instead of staying too general. ProfileLoom
This article about the Navy’s body fat calculator is quite insightful, especially the breakdown of body fat percentages by age group for service members. It makes me think about how different organizations establish health standards and the varied approaches to measurement, much like when we consider different strategies to promote participation in activities, such as those found on choicer voicer free. I find it interesting that the water displacement test is considered the most accurate, though impractical for regular use.

The note that the Navy formula was built decades ago and originally validated on male recruits is the most useful line on this page, and it is not something the other calculators bother to say. It explains the systematic drift people report instead of leaving them to assume they measured themselves wrong. The tape-measure sensitivity deserves equal billing: neck circumference is the one people take inconsistently, and a centimetre there moves the result noticeably more than the same error at the hip does. Since what you are tracking is a trend, measuring the same way every time matters more than measuring perfectly once. Unrelated aside — I keep a similar set of no-signup browser tools bookmarked, BulkImagen among them.

This Navy body fat calculator is a handy way to estimate body fat using just tape measurements of the waist, hips, and neck, and it’s useful that the results include lean mass and fat mass alongside the Navy fitness category. I also appreciate the honest disclaimer that the formula can be off by 1-3% and is less reliable for very muscular builds — too many calculators skip that caveat. For anyone tracking progress visually alongside these numbers, pairing measurements with a photo-based approach can help; I’ve seen people use an AI image editing tool (AI image editing tool ) to organize and annotate their progress photos over time. Overall, a practical and transparent tool.
The Navy method is definitely useful for consistent tracking, but it clearly falls short for athletes with significant muscle mass since it relies solely on circumference. Given the outdated nature of these formulas, do you think the Navy will eventually adopt a more modern standard that accounts for body composition?

It’s interesting that you mention the hydrostatic test is the most accurate but impractical for ongoing progress due to cost and availability—that trade-off is exactly why tools like this Navy calculator stay popular. I also appreciate the note that no body fat percent calculator works well for very muscular builds, since that’s a common frustration. On a totally different note, if you ever want a browser-based creative break, gesture synth is a free online musical instrument controlled by hand gestures using webcam tracking.
The caveat that tape-based estimates get shaky for very muscular builds is the part worth remembering, since that’s exactly when the number can look worse than reality. Offering both the narrowest-waist and at-navel options is also a nice touch for staying consistent between check-ins. On a completely different note, there’s also The Voicer Choicer if you ever want a browser-based voice game.
This calculator is interesting for understanding the Navy’s method, though the comments show how varied people’s results can be. It’s a good starting point for tracking, but I also like exploring different mods for games, like The Choicer Voicer GameBanana Packs & Mods, to keep things fresh.

The Navy body fat calculator is a useful way to get a quick estimate without complicated equipment. I also think tools that help people create a clear blurred image when documenting measurements can make it easier to keep visual records organized.
The Navy formula is a practical reference for tracking body fat percentage changes over time without requiring specialized equipment. While neck and waist circumference measurements have limitations for athletic physiques with high muscle mass, consistent measurements still provide helpful trends for fitness tracking and body composition goals.
Separating the input-field help from the output definitions makes the interface easier to understand. A clearly dated source for the formula, together with a prominent explanation of what the estimate cannot establish, would improve the documentation around the results. pips2
This calculator is interesting for getting a general idea, though I’ve seen other methods give different numbers. It’s helpful to have a quick way to estimate, even if it’s not perfectly precise.
